Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore project, 1957-1964.

Series 3 of record group 92-213 consists records relating to the Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore project from the Michigan Department of Conservation for the years 1957-1964. Includes correspondence, proposals, reports, hearing transcripts, and maps. The state, with local support, campaigned to have Sleeping Bear Dunes State Park be designated a national lakeshore. Throughout the 1960's, the Department recognized the great need and the economic benefit for outdoor recreational lands and facilities in the Great Lakes area. The Department successfully lobbied for the status of national lakeshore for the area in Leelanau County. It was authorized on October 21, 1970.
